This documentary follows actress and comedienne Lily Tomlin for two years as she works on her award-winning play "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe." In 1983, Tomlin and her personal and professional partner Jane Wagner begin road testing material for Tomlin's one-woman show, questioning the audience extensively after her performances. With the help of her road manager, Cheryl Swannack, Tomlin rigorously prepares for her 1985 Broadway premiere.
