  • Obvious Child is a romcom with a sting in its tail. And Slate is a dynamo, nailing every laugh while showing a true actor's gift for nuance. show more

  • Yet the heart of the film lies in what it manages to say, without boldface or italics, about how hard it is for Donna, like so many of her anxious cohort, to make genuine connections, to break free of narcissistic constraints and become a stand-up grown-up. show more

  • Raunchy humor laced with gradually revealed vulnerability makes for a winning combination in Obvious Child, a wildly funny and appealing female-centric comedy that launches very promising talent on both sides of the camera. show more

This did seem like a two hour episode of HBO's Girls, but how quickly we forget that there wasn't anything like this for women before Girls--so now there are TWO things, and people are already over it? This was refreshing, funny, and surprisingly warm. Jenny Slate and Jake Lacy are impossibly charming and likeable. I know it hasn't been a great summer, but this was EASILY the best thing I saw all summer.

If you like HBO series "Girls" with Lena Dunham, then you will like this. Although I am not a prude, I found the lead a little too obsessed with bodily functions that involved farting and pooping, descriptions of vaginas, etc. Primarily found it "unfunny" and crass. Sorry for those people who really feel this way or have to express themselves in this way -- a little too narcissistic for me.

This was the worst piece of S--- I ever saw and I was an agent…I couldn't even enjoy my popcorn….Not a funny moment and the lead laughed at everything she said…and who cared she gets an abortion and moves on with her love life…absolutely nothing good about this waste of my time and money
