    Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle

Here's the tricky thing about The Strangers. Sure, it uses cinema to ends that are objectionable and vile ... but it does it well, with more than usual skill. show more

    Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer

No one is getting at anything in The Strangers, except the cheapest, ugliest kind of sadistic titillation. show more

Bertino does an excellent job building dread, especially during the first half of the movie. Every silence, pause and sudden noise startles - and the results, frankly, are more frightening than the graphic torture scenes in movies like "Hostel" and "Saw." show more

    Michael Rechtshaffen The Hollywood Reporter

A spare, creepily atmospheric psychological thriller with a death grip on the psychological aspect. show more

What possessed Liv Tyler to take a role in this sadistic, unmotivated home-invasion flick. show more

Bertino's taut, spare thriller is plenty scary without relying on pseudo-historical context. Anchored by convincing performances from Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, both of whom elevate their roles above the standard horror-movie caricature, this is an enormously unsettling movie. show more

    Maitland McDonagh TV Guide

There's nothing more to it than meets the eye, but Bertino understands the mechanics of suspense and knows how to use them. show more

    James Berardinelli ReelViews

This is one of those rare horror movies that concentrates on suspense and terror rather than on gore and a high body count. show more

Jennie Punter The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Both Speedman and Tyler deliver solid, nuanced performances as a couple caught at the most fragile moment in their relationship. show more

    Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald

You can only string an audience along for so long with scary masks and sudden appearances at the window, and after a while, the suspense starts seeping out of The Strangers, because you realize that's all there's going to be to the movie. show more

I was left with lots of questions. Who were these masked intruders? What was their purpose. When the two boys found the couple on the floor at the end of the movie and the girl screamed - Did she live? Is this movie actually based on a true story? Other that scary moments from time to time, there was no plot and no resolution at the end.

This is just about one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Can someone please think of something original for a change. This is your A typical slasher movie where the people being stalked make horrible decisions throughout the entire movie. If this is the way people really react than I am the smartest person alive and the general population is way more stupid than I had previously thought. Now, I realize it is just a movie ,BUT, it is the kind of movie that you want to yell at the characters "OMG are you and idiot!!" with every move they make. I am very sorry I wasted my money ordering this on PPV. Please save your money and rent the worst movie you have already seen and see it a second time because it is quite possibly better.

This is not a horror movie. It is more of a terror movie and it isnt very terrifying. It is suspenseful though. Movie is only 78 minutes long which is about as long as it needs to be. Dont spend any money to see it. I saw the unrated version although I cant understand why it was unrated.
