Ryan Murphy has cast Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace in the third season of the anthology series "American Crime Story." The Oscar winner will play the blonde-haired fashion designer and sister to Gianni Versace, whose murder is the central focus of season 3.
Edgar Ramirez is set to play Gianni, while former "Glee" star Darren Criss is serial killer Andrew Cunanan. The season is based on Maureen Orth's book "Vulgar Favors."
There was some speculation that Murphy might tap singer Lady Gaga for the role of Donatella. She has previously appeared in "American Horror Story." But Murphy told reporters last January, "She's a friend. But she's very busy this next year — she's doing Super Bowl and then she's doing 'A Star Is Born' and I believe that she's going on tour."
"Versace: American Crime Story" will likely air in late 2018. The second season, about Hurricane Katrina, is also expected to air earlier that year. The first season, "The People v. O.J. Simpson," debuted to widespread acclaim and cleaned up at the Emmys.Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
