Here she is! Twenty years after Disney released the animated movie "Mulan," a live-action movie is officially in production.

Disney announced the start of filming today, and offered a first look at Liu Yifei (aka Crystal Liu) as Mulan:

Niki Caro is directing the film for a current release date of March 27, 2020.

Here's the synopsis (via ScreenRant):

"'Mulan' is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever."

The film will reportedly costar Donnie Yeun as Commander Tung, Mulan's mentor and teacher; Gong Li as the villain, a powerful witch; Jet Li as the emperor of China; Xana Tang as Mulan's sister, in another new role for the live-action version; and Yoson An as Mulan's (new) love interest, Chen Honghui, described by THR as "a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung's unit. He becomes Mulan's most important ally and eventual love interest."

"Mulan" is scheduled for release in theaters March 27, 2020
