There's a "Game of Thrones" uprising going on, and no, it's not the one in Westeros.
Disgruntled fans are calling on HBO to remake Season 8 -- specifically, "with competent writers." Harsh. A Change.org user named Dylan D. started a petition last week, and the message is short and to the point. It says:
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
This series deserves a final season that makes sense.
Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!
The petition has gained traction. There are more than 67,000 signatures at the time of publishing -- and at least 13,000 of those came in the time it took to write this article. Clearly, there are a lot of fans who are displeased by how the final season is going. Beyond the petition, there was outcry on Twitter this week, with many fans slamming Season 8, Episode 5 as the "worst episode ever."
It's not uncommon for the end of a series to be divisive, particularly in a case like "Game of Thrones," where there are so many characters that fans have strong feelings about. Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont) said in March 2018 that while he liked the ending, he expected it to be controversial. He noted that "you cannot please everyone," and the existence of the petition supports Glain's point.
For all that we're sure HBO is sad to see "Game of Thrones" go, we'd be shocked if the network actually decided to remake Season 8. Perhaps even more shocking would be if the actors were willing to sign on for a redo after all they went through to shoot it the first time. And yet, if it happens, you can bet we'll be watching ... along with millions and millions of others.
