Ben Schneider Biography

Ben Schneider is the founder, lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter behind the acclaimed indie rock band Lord Huron. A native of Okemos, Michigan, Schneider's creative work is deeply rooted in his experiences growing up around the Great Lakes, particularly the namesake Lake Huron, where he spent his formative years playing music around campfires.

Before embarking on his musical career, Schneider pursued the visual arts, studying at the University of Michigan and living in France and New York City before relocating to Los Angeles. This background in visual art profoundly informs his approach to music, which he describes in cinematic and painterly terms, often creating detailed visual worlds to accompany his songs.

In the spring of 2010, Schneider returned home to Michigan and recorded three songs on the shores of Lake Huron—material that would become the Into the Sun EP and mark the birth of Lord Huron as a solo project. After releasing two self-recorded EPs and generating significant buzz, Schneider assembled a live band, recruiting his childhood friends: Mark Barry (drums), Miguel Briseño (bass), and Tom Renaud (guitar)—all fellow Michigan natives.

Schneider's creative vision is central to Lord Huron's identity. He is known for his distinctive fusion of indie folk, rock, and Americana, evoking the vast landscapes of the American West and themes of nature, mystery, and adventure. His work often incorporates elaborate storytelling and conceptual narratives, drawing inspiration from pulp fiction, Western dime novels, and authors like Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry.

From the band's debut, Lonesome Dreams (2012), to the mainstream breakthrough of Strange Trails (2015)—which featured the hit "The Night We Met" in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why—Schneider has led Lord Huron through a steady evolution. He is also the driving force behind the band's unique visual and multimedia projects, including album art and music videos that blur the line between reality and fiction.
