Plot Summary
The late 19th century finds the town of Black River Falls experiencing a wave of disturbing, macabre and truly eccentric occurrences. Perhaps the town's economic troubles or the harsh Wisconsin climate contribute to the plague of murder, arson, insanity, disease, suicide and other ills the cursed citizens endure. Part archival investigation, part dramatization, this film resurrects the demons of Black River Falls through bleak photographs and re-enactments of the town's sordid news articles.

  • Takes a fabulous idea and overplays it, making an average picture out of some truly extraordinary material. show more

  • The film is not exactly a documentary, and not quite a period horror movie either. But it has elements of both. At its best, it's hypnotic and provocative. show more

  • It's a parade of insanity, murder, suicide, arson and crimes of passion; delivered in a style as sardonic and tongue-in-cheek as a Vincent Price monologue; complemented by deadpan narration that keeps injecting inappropriate bits of civic boosterism. show more
