Godzilla stormed back last year. King Kong stomps into theaters in 2017 with Godzilla hot on his hairy heels a year later.

And then they'll go after each other.

"Godzilla vs. Kong" -- the clash of the iconic movie monsters -- arrives in theaters in 2020, uniting the franchises of Warner Bros. and Legendary studios, it was announced Wednesday.

"The companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise," says a statement. "All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new."

In all, there will be three more films to go with last year's "Godzilla." Production begins next week on “Kong: Skull Island” for a 2017 release, with “Godzilla 2” scheduled for 2018, followed by the marquee matchup two years later.

“Audiences really responded to 'Godzilla,'” says Legendary's CEO Thomas Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”
