'High School Musical' Director Kenny Ortega Signs Multi-Year Netflix Deal
Kenny Ortega, the director of the Disney Channel's "High School Musical" franchise and "Descendants," is the latest content creator to sign up with Netflix.
Ortega has inked a multi-year overall deal with the streaming service. While he did not have a deal with Disney Channel, he has been behind some of the network's biggest hits in recent years.
He's just the latest creative talent to be wooed by Netflix, joining super producers like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.
Ortega's first two projects for Netflix will be the movie "Auntie Claus" and the TV series "Julie and the Phantoms."
"Auntie Claus," which he'll direct and produce, is based on book series and follows a young girl determined to get to the bottom of why her eccentric, Christmas-loving aunt disappears every Christmas.
"Julie and the Phantoms," which Ortega will executive produce, is a musical comedy based on the Brazilian series. Julie is a teen girl who finds her passion for music with the help of a band of three teen boys who have been dead for 25 years.
Meanwhile, "High School Musical," which Ortega shepherded through three films, is getting a sort of reboot with Disney+'s "High School Musical: The Musical."
