Michael B. Jordan has been cast to play an attorney fighting to free a man on death row in the adaptation of the bestseller "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption."

The "Fruitvale Station" star, riding high with "Fantastic Four" in August and "Creed in November, will also serve as one of the executive producers of the movie based on Bryan Stevenson's memoir.

Destin Daniel Cretton of "Short Term 12" will direct.

"Bryan’s story hit me harder than anything I’ve read in a long time," said Cretton in a statement. "I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity to bring his story to the screen."
