"Suicide Squad" left some fans feeling like they didn't get enough of two popular characters, but they're still moving toward getting their own very unique spinoff.

Screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa recently discussed the possible Joker and Harley Quinn spinoff with the U.K.'s Metro, and they've come up with a script that sounds promising. Apparently, it meshes together two projects you'd probably never have thought to put together before: the black comedy "Bad Santa" and the heart-wrenching TV drama "This Is Us."

"We wrote 'Bad Santa' a couple of years ago," Ficarra said, "and it was that sensibility mixed with our 'This Is Us' sensibility. ... We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a 'Bad Santa,' f***ed up, mentally deranged people."

If you're having trouble imagining what that may turn out like, here's what they let slip about the plot: Harley and the Joker will be having relationship problems, so Harley will kidnap Dr. Phil for help. The writers are hoping to get the real Dr. Phil to play himself.

The movie's future, though, is still unclear. "Everybody loved the script" after they submitted it, according to Ficarra, but Requa cautioned that they don't know when it will be made. Fans should keep in mind that there are a lot of steps between a script being turned in and a movie being released.

In the meantime, DC Comics fans can look forward to seeing more of the iconic characters. Both Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" movie and Margot Robbie's "Birds of Prey" are in the pipeline.
