"Villains" made a splash at SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, in March, and now the dark comedy thriller has been acquired by Gunpowder & Sky in association with MoviePass Films.

The production companies reached a deal with Bron Studios' The Realm and plan to release the film this summer, Variety reports. "Villains" made a case for itself with success at SXSW, earning positive reviews; the Dan Berk and Robert Olsen-directed film currently has a 95% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and a 92% audience score.

"Villains" has a talented cast that includes Bill Skarsgård, Maika Monroe, Kyra Sedgwick, and Jeffrey Donovan. It follows a pair of amateur criminals who break into a suburban home and stumble upon a dark secret. Also in the mix are two sadistic homeowners who will do anything to maintain their secret.

The film was produced by Star Thrower Entertainment's Trevor White, Tim White, and Allan Mandelbaum, as well as The Realm's Garrick Dion. Kevin Turen, Chadd Harbold, and Per Melita executive produced alongside Bron Studios' Aaron L. Gilbert and Creative Wealth Media's Jason Cloth.

"Villains" is due out this summer.
