Rachel Marlow, a rich and glamorous film director, is found dead in her bath with her wrists slashed. It looks as if she has finally said her own goodbye to a world that had become too fast. In a background of Civil Service intrigue and vicious gossip-mongering, Dr. James Austen tries to restore some sanity in an attempt to stop the Juggernaut of the Establishment from crushing the private lives of ordinary people.

But when his tormentors try to strike a bargain, Borozhek becomes a key figure in an even more frightening chase to the death.

For Austen, the frightened Irena is strictly a private patient, but for Dawnay, she is the beginning of a trail which leads him to a deadly plot of political revenge.
