  • Despite Bates' mastery at bringing unexpected depth to unhinged characters, Dolores is a few pints low on chills and challenge. show more

  • The mysteries of Dolores Claiborne are never gripping enough to consume an audience, and there are few, if any, surprises along the way. But the women are wonderful and reason enough to see the picture. show more

  • It's sometimes distracting to tell a story in flashbacks and memories; the story line gets sidetracked. The director, Taylor Hackford, is successful, however, in making the present seem to flow into and out of the past. show more

Bates is a great actress. Here she is a protective mother who senses things going on with her husband. This "filthy creep" takes all the hard earned money Dolores works for,and cheats his daughter out of college funds. When Joe gets drunk and crass,Dolores gets revenge and he gets his "just desserts";We find out Joe has been molesting selena, his innocent daughter.Dolores gets in law trouble.A detective hounds her because he knows something she did to her hubby. Joe gets angry, and she plants a hole he falls into. When a wealthy friend kills herself, the detective puts the blame on dolores again. Jennifer Love Hewitt plays the confused Selena, who seems oblivious to what happened, until she takes the same ferry shared by her and her father.Bates is fabulous in any film she tackles. My favorite is "Fried Green Tomatoes, and I love her!
