In Mountain City, two newspapers are pitted against each other. One is owned by gangster Charles Gillette, the other by Ralph Houston (Fred MacMurray). Gillette tries to buy Ralph's newspaper, but Ralph refuses his offer, angering his girlfriend, Vina Swain (Frances Farmer). Vina agrees to work for the gangster's paper to spite Ralph and her father (Charles Ruggles), also a journalist. Unprepared for the perils of reporting, she makes errors leading to a suicide, and is confronted by corruption.
