  • When Boseman shows us Brown doing his thing onstage, the movie comes alive. show more

  • This is all good movie material, so far as it goes ... but Get on Up can't go any further. Sometimes damaged people stay damaged, and sometimes popular artists make their contribution and then stay in one place forever. It's a big letdown for everybody, but in a biopic, it's poison. show more

  • All the more remarkably, then, this flawed but startling biopic stars another performer, Chadwick Boseman, who fills Brown's shoes with a dynamism that transcends imitation. show more

One star is generous, starts off portraying James as a drug user, crazy unstable person. Sets the tone for an European view of a AA legend. The people in his family are just as negative as JB is portrayed to be. Dad a gambler, Mom abandons him an so fort and so on to the majority of people in James life. There may have been some truth to the references but it's played out like a horror show. Excruciating and insulting as an AA to watch this lopsided movie. Spike Lee should have produced it adding his knowledge of the culture while NOT overemphasizing GROSS negativity. One of the worst scenes ever was a young woman making a PASS at James during dinner with the elders of the family SITTING at the table. (sickening and disrespectful) Really? That happened??? I give credit to the ACTOR playing James Brown but I turned off this ridiculous movie half way in to it. If I was at the theater I would have walked out.

This movie was Awesome! Chadwick nailed it with his look...singing...and was like watching James Brown himself! I'm so glad we saw it...gave me a true understanding of the hardship Brown went through and surpassed with his talent. A wonderful portrayal and I hope he wins an Academy Award! He deserves it!

Excellent movie and is looking forward to the DVD to come out. Chadwick Boseman is an excellent actor. He is the next Will Smith and Denzel Washington. The Jackie Robinson movie scored 100% and so did this movie. Congratulations Chadwick. Looking forward to move great performances.
