  • Green has chosen for his focus to fall on Enrique, in many ways the least interesting character in his story, rather than the son or even the mother who is surprisingly protective and understanding. show more

  • Manages somehow to be gritty, delicate, in your face and nuanced at the same time. It's a beautiful, compelling, sometimes harrowing family drama, with excellent performances across the board. show more

  • This is the first movie to make me equate coming home from prison with coming home from war. show more

Gun Hiil Road, directed by R. Ernesto Green, is technically a very good film. The action is fine, with especially good perfomances by Harmony Santana and Esai Morales. The cinematography captures the colors of the Puerto Rican milieu, exceptionally well. The soundtrack is great, I want to buy it. Gun Hill Road has got action, tension, sensuality, and tells a sad and thought- provoking story. Michael is a good looking teen who wants to be a girl, and he looks like a sexy young Latina 100%, even when he is not dressed in his girl outfits. His mom has known for a while, but his Dad who just came home from prison is in for a shock, and the pain of disappointment. He is probably the victim in the story. He is released on parole, supposedly coming home to a strong family support system –but not so. Lots of stuff has happened while he has been away, including his wife having an affair, and his boy becoming a girl. Some people may not like this film because of the subject matter. However, it depicts complex family issues with intelligence, and some subtlety, for the most part, avoiding brutal reality . Despite the underlying sadness, the vibrancy of urban youth culture is beautifully captured to provide the film with an inevitable upbeat.
