Whitney Houston deserved better than to go out onscreen with this botch job remake of a 1976 soap opera that never deserved another thought. show more

The look, styles, dialogue and attitudes all feel more 21st century than 1968, but this new Sparkle still sparkles more brightly than its 1976 namesake, which was a sort of rough draft for Dreamgirls. show more

Energetic, colorful and packed with strong performances and musical numbers good enough to get by, Sparkle beams brightly. show more

Sparkle isn't blindingly original but it delivers solid entertainment, and despite the clichés I was never for a moment bored. show more

Most of the stuff that's new in the new Sparkle, written by Mara Brock Akil (who is married to the director), is shrewd and cleverly considered. The stuff that's old is what people responded to back in '76. show more

While Sparkle doesn't give the audience a lasting memory of Houston's voice at its most soaring, it does manage to provide a lingering sense of loss, mixed with celebration and grim irony. show more

I gave this vey entertaining movie 5 stars for the music alone! While this was a sometimes over dramatic story it held my interest . I really thought Whitney Houston did a fine job also as the mother. Her gospel song was a very inspiring and well done by her . Jorden Sparks is wonderful and incredible as well as the girls who played her sisters. They reall did a great job of taking me back in time to the girl groups of the sixties music which I love.I will definitley buy this soundtrack!

Great movie. The music was great. A movie that I can see with my family. Tika, Carmen and Whitney stood out.

I loved it..Can\'t wait for the DVD....I agree I wish I could have seen more of Whitney, but the overall cast was good. I was in the audience routing for the girls.

Sparkle was entertaining but lacked the drama in the original movie. There was never a big climatic, on the edge of your seat moment. It was pretty cut and dry. SPOILER ALERT The rewrite on Sister\'s storyline added a little drama, but at the end of the day. . .it was flat. Whitney Houston sings a bit and Tamela Mann does not sing at all. I know the movie is supposed to be about Sparkle, however how can you have these two powerhouse singers in the movie without them doing a little something?? If they sang a but while they were working in the dress shop, cooking in the kitchen and of course the church scene would have been a great place as well. With the right dialogue and preface, it would have worked and not taken away from Sparkle\'s journey towards her own calling or Whitney Houston\'s adversion to her daughter\'s pursuit of music.

I was very disappointed in this movie...couldn\'t wait for it to end! I did feel sad watching Whitney and thinking...what a waste of talent...she died so young.

Even though it is a remake, there are enough differences for the movie to stand on it\'s own! I LOVED IT! Mike Epps, Whitney Houston, Derek Luke, and Tamela Mann brought seasoned acting quality and STAR POWER to the movie; and Jordin Sparks really had a SPARKLING debut performance! I laughed and cried! Such a great experience, I am seeing it again today! Bravo and Encore!
