It's the story of a young married couple undone by a family tragedy, but the film loses its way, at one point turning into a political harangue. show more

Rare, too, is the way The Broken Circle Breakdown incorporates music into its narrative. The songs - traditional bluegrass and country, and a clutch of new ones rooted in same - are as integral to the characters and their relationships as the dialogue. show more

This movie has one of the finest final scenes in a movie this year and, if there were justice, Baetens would break out as an international star. show more

The acting is so good you could watch it without the Flemish to English subtitles. A startling mix of heartbreak and joy. The blue-grass songs are masterfully woven into the story. A masterpiece that will stay with you.
