‘The Raid’ is about as simple a story as it gets, the Indonesian capital of Jakarta has been corrupted by a drug lord called Tama (Ray Sahetaphy) and he needs to be brought down. Easier said than done, since Tama lives in and rules over a whole 30-storey tower-block where police and other drug gangs over the last decade have tried and failed to overthrow him. The majority of the tenants are employed by Tama, so already the inexperienced SWAT team have a pretty severe logistical problem to get to him. You can guess what happens next. A few twists and some great one-liners aside, the action is so relentless you feel tired ************* it! Welcome to the Indonesian martial arts style of Silat, 90% of the film is just chock full of some of the most intense and realistic fight scenes you’ll ever see. Tama may be protected by some of the scariest criminals in Jakarta, but none of them holds a candle to his right-hand man Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian). Described as ‘a maniac of feet and fists’, this diminutive henchman would make a Tazmanian devil look jaded. There’s so many great fight sequences, my personal favourite involves despatching a bad guy with part of a door which just has to be seen to be believed. As good as Mad Dog is, the hero is young rookie Rama (Iko Uwais) who is even better. As ever in such films, the best and the baddest leave things to the end and Mad Dog is involved in a mind-blowing three-way fight between Rama and Tama’s lieutenant Andi. Its one of the most incredible fight scenes i’ve ever seen, punishing and brutal with a level of intensity i don’t think i’ve ever seen in a film before. ‘The Raid’ borrows heavily from many other classic action films, but director Gareth Huw Evans has just raised the bar a few storeys higher with some quite brilliant fight choreography, fluid and totally uninhibited. Evans also lets you see as much of the action as possible, most action films rely on shaky-cam, fast-editing and sound effects but Evans makes sure you can see every move and counter move, which all adds to the realism. A totally intense physical experience from start to finish, if you love action movies you’
