With the help of acting giants, Jenkins turns The Savages into a twisted, bittersweet pleasure. show more

The right mix of humor and horror and with not even a shred of sentimentality. show more

While the film is heart-wrenchingly sad, it also is mordantly funny, uncomfortably prickly and above all, unflinching in its depiction of a believable sibling relationship. show more

I can't begin to count the ways in which The Savages pleased me, but the very best of them is the way Tamara Jenkins's comedy stays tough while sneakily turning tender. show more

A movie of absurdist humor, brutal realism and dementia. show more

The Savages is a TV movie made for the big screen - and it needs the larger venue to accommodate the huge performances of its stars, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney. show more

    Kirk Honeycutt The Hollywood Reporter

It is more sad-funny than funny-funny, but Jenkins has enough empathy and wit to realize that even the sad parts are, somehow, funny. show more

Both Linney and Hoffman are so specific in creating these characters that we see them as people, not elements in a plot. Hoffman in particular shows how many disguises he has within his seemingly immutable presence; would you know it is the same actor here and in two other films this season, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" and "Charlie Wilson's War"? show more

A bracingly honest, funny movie about death and family that skillfully sidesteps the usual pitfalls of sentimentality and mawkishness. It’s what you might call an awards season miracle. show more

My wife and I just saw it ---what a truly MOVING picture --- Sad but true. Many of us will have parents like this---very difficult. And as we all get older -- we see ourselves in the same senario. A must see for all of us. GREAT.

The Acting is really good, but the story is all about Quiet Desperation. This movie even borders on being slow and boring!!!! And I agree with the reviewer, ksharlan, below. Clearly, this story is about the writer herself, who has a miserable self-absorbed life. Don't waste your time seeing this bomb. I walked out 3/4 of the way through the movie. I just couldn't take it anymore.

This movie spend a great deal of time trying to be credible by going into details about a common event - children dealing with parents that are not able to take care of themselves, and at the end they blew it by making sure to wrap it up in a nice bow. What a waste. Also, why does is seem there are so many stories about "writers" and "actors". If these writers were talented they would write about real peaple, instead of about themselves and thier self obsorbed lives. Maybe they are just lazy.

I saw the Savages last night and what a great movie it moved me ...it shows you real life and how people see the other side of the story how do you see your Dad suffering silently and when can you do about it and what does it do to your life....and how siblings can come closer in a situation like this and put aside their stupid differences... I loved it and wished that when my time comes I can go fast and not to burden my children.. Please God grant me my wish..
