Murder in the First

Series Summary
A complex case proceeds for a full season in this scripted drama, co-created by Emmy-winner Steven Bochco and newcomer Eric Lodal. Homicide detectives Terry English and Hildy Mulligan, partners in the San Francisco Police Department, head the investigation. English is a former Marine with plenty of experience as an inspector, while Mulligan is a sexy, self-assured officer who doesn't flaunt her attributes. Their relationship is strong and fearless because solving crimes is the top motivation. Fellow SFPD colleagues are thoughtful David Molk and his tough partner, Edgar Navarro, and the squad supervisor is candid Lt. Jim Koto. Now, Silicon Valley tech whiz Erich Blunt is on their radar as a suspect in two seemingly unrelated murders.

  • Bochco and his team of writers find more character depth than we commonly see on TNT & USA programming, which is nice, but the show does feel a little flatter and more predictable than fans of Bochco’s best shows may expect. The mystery may be dull but the cast finds a way to elevate it. show more

  • With a season-long focus on a single case, the story has plenty of breathing room, and the San Francisco setting feels particularly natural. As unnecessary things go, Murder is exquisite. [13 Jun 2014, p.75] show more

  • Murder in the First, a masterfully paced balance of tricky whodunit and character development, seems to have benefited from both Bochco's hits and the misses, as well as the cable-led experimentation with shorter seasons. show more
