The Bletchley Circle

Series Summary
Set in 1952, "The Bletchley Circle" tells of four women who have returned to normal lives after working at Bletchley Park -- the site where the Germans' infamous "enigma cypher" was broken by British mathematicians and code breakers during World War II. One of them, Susan, notices a pattern to the murders of several women -- which is in the news -- but no one one else seems to have noticed the pattern. She speaks with the police about it but is not very successful, so she enlists the help of her former friends and fellow cryptographers to investigate the cases.

  • The drama might have had more depth and texture if more time had been spent contextualizing their relationships instead of just showing the ladies putting up with a series of oafs. But there's only so much Bletchley can do in three installments, and it has many sustaining qualities to offset the relatively thin supporting characters. show more

  • A smart and highly suspenseful miniseries. show more

  • Both series [The Bletchley Circle and "Call the Midwife"] find a clever, entertaining way to pay tribute to women who in their time were often overlooked and underestimated, and nevertheless found ways to never be ordinary. show more
