Sam Smith dropped a big clue on Twitter over Labor Day Weekend: a black-and-white photo of a finger, apparently his, wearing a silver ring with a little black octopus logo.

As any international man of mystery would immediately know, this is the symbol for the evil criminal organization Spectre, arch-nemesis of James Bond.

And as any music fan would know, Smith had a big announcement coming.

On Tuesday, the speculation was confirmed. Smith would be performing the theme song for the upcoming 007 movie "Spectre," opening in the United States Nov. 6. The song, "Writing's On The Wall," will be available for streaming on Sept. 25.

“This is one of the highlights of my career," Smith said in a statement. "I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

The Bond themes -- there have been 23 before this -- are among the most famous film songs, often becoming crossover hits and reaping awards. The last theme song, “Skyfall,” performed by Adele, picked up an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song as well as the Grammy Award for best song written for visual media.
