Bless him, he's still rowing. "Game of Thrones" has literally dozens of characters to follow, but every year someone invariably asks, "What happened to Gendry?" We haven't seen him since the Season 3 finale, "Mhysa," when Davos set him free from Dragonstone and gave him a rowboat with directions to King's Landing.
So did he ever make it to King's Landing? Will we ever see him again? Season 6 brought back a lot of characters we hadn't seen in a few seasons, but we didn't see Gendry. We did, however, add two more characters to the extended rowing crew: Brienne and Pod.
Actor Joe Dempsie has poked fun of his character's absence on Twitter...

... and the showrunners addressed the question this week in their UFC Unfiltered podcast interview. Spoiler alert: They shared no new info, they just joked about the lack of closure with this character.
The podcast hosts didn't even remember who Gendry was, but their producer wanted to know what happened to him. So David Benioff first described the character -- King's Landing blacksmith; Robert Baratheon's illegitimate son; friend to Arya Stark; got *close* with Melisandre, who had dastardly plans for him before he was set free by Davos. We last saw him rowing away.
Dan Weiss: "He's still rowing."
David Benioff: "Yes, he's still rowing. It's a long, a very long..."
Weiss: "He's coming up on Florida."
Benioff: "He's getting in great shape. Think of the shape he's in after rowing for four seasons."
Weiss: "Big lats."
In the same interview, the showrunners revealed Season 7 would be delayed, and that was the big takeaway, but hopefully they were just holding back spoilers on Gendry. Fans want to see him again -- he is King Robert's son, after all, and if Jon Snow can be King in the North, surely there's a future for Gendry ... and Arya? That would be quite a reunion. Or maybe we'll see Gendry row into King's Landing just in time for Daenerys Targaryen's ships to arrive.
As we continue to wait, at least we can enjoy all the brilliant Gendry memes fans have had four seasons to create, like this one:
