The 2016 election has been one long, national nightmare — in real life and in fiction.

Showtime unveiled the first trailer for season 6 of "Homeland," which sees Carrie (Claire Danes) return from overseas to work for a Muslim aid organization in New York. Last we saw Carrie, she was living in Berlin as a security consultant for a billionaire philanthropist and helped the CIA avert a major terrorist attack.

The season takes place between a presidential election and the inauguration — a "strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests." Hmm, sounds a little too close to the truth!
The trailer is moody and intense, with many shots of Carrie, Saul (Mandy Patinkin), and Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) looking perturbed and angry. At one point, Dar warns Carrie, "I don't think you understand how vulnerable you are." To which she shoots back, "I don't think you do."

Don't mess with Mathison!

There is, however, no sign of Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn, last seen in a coma at death's door.

"Homeland" season 6 premieres Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
