That was quick.

“The Guilty” is Denmark’s entry for this year’s Best Foreign Language Feature Academy Award, after premiering at Sundance earlier this year and steadily building buzz ever since. And, much like any popular foreign language feature, it’s being set for an American remake, this time led by producer and star Jake Gyllenhaal (per Variety).

The original film, which won the world cinema audience award at Sundance, follows a police officer who is demoted to desk work at an emergency call center. One night he receives a call from a woman claiming to be kidnapped and things get even crazier from there. It’s a classically styled single-location thriller that has kept audiences around the world on the edge of their seats, so it makes sense that a slick Hollywood remake is in the works.

Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker are producing through their Nine Stories shingle, alongside the team from Bold Films. Original co-writer/director Gustav Möller (who I met at Fantastic Fest and seems like a really nice guy) and original producer Lina Flint, will be executive producing.

Gyllenhaal is about to have a very big year, thanks to high profile roles in Dan Gilroy’s “Velvet Buzzsaw” (it’ll premiere at Sundance and debut on Netflix in February) and a little art house movie called “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” where he’ll play famous villain Mysterio. “The Guilty” should fit into his schedule nicely, as he alternates between handcrafted indies (like this year’s “Wildlife”) and big-budget studio fare (like sci-fi extravaganza “Life”).
