David E. Fluhr Biography

Having been a composer and a performer since an early age, David attended the Manhattan School of Music and Crane School of Music in New York with a major in Electronic Music Composition and Recording. David came to California in 1980, where he worked his way up as a studio assistant/vault manager, sound recordist, and sound editor, learning the art of sound for picture at Compact Video.

David began mixing solo in 1984 and soon became one of the "go-to" mixers for music on television. During this period, David won six Emmy Awards with 38 nominations; his first for Andre Previn and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, to a Dolly, Kenny, and Willie music special. In a move towards his goal to mix feature films, David worked at Larson Studios in 1991.

There, he mixed movies for television, hour-long dramatic series, and feature films. In 1996, David moved to TODD-AO Studios. There, David won three more Emmys, 1 CAS Award, and 5 Golden Reels. David then transitioned to mixing feature films full time. In 2004, David was invited to Walt Disney Studios' Stage A, gaffing a two-mixer feature film stage.

Working with Disney's Feature Animation and Live-Action divisions has provided him with a wide range of film genres. During this time, David has developed many close relationships with directors, picture editors, sound editors, composers, and music editors. IN 20122-2012 David researched and developed the Atmos workflows for Disney Studios and has continued to refine this for Disney Animation films.

David also gives frequent lecture demonstrations about postproduction sound mixing for film. Participants include studio executives, film students, high school students, and others. He has to date won 9 Emmys, 5 CAS Awards, and numerous other sound nominations and acknowledgments. He enjoys baseball, swimming, computers, ham radio (KC6MEW), water skiing, and running.
