Critique of Jack Stanton's Character Potential
Susan Stanton Your grandfather was a great man. Jack Stanton could also be a great man, if he wasn't such a faithless, thoughtless, disorganized, undisciplined shit.
The Completion of Lesson One
Nanny McPhee * Lesson 1: to stop fighting, is complete.
A Unique Role in the Nativity Play
Daisy We've been given our parts in the nativity play! And I'm the lobster!
Karen The Lobster?
Daisy Yeah!
Karen In the nativity play?
[confused]
Daisy Yeah! First Lobster!
Karen There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?
[still confused]
Daisy Duh!
Five Essential Lessons for Children
Nanny McPhee Your children require 5 lessons.
Confrontation Over Trust and Deceit
Walt Disney Please, sit down.
P.L. Travers I shall not sit in the seat of a trickster, a fraudster, a sneak!
[sternly]
Walt Disney Pamela...
P.L. Travers Mrs. Travers, please!
Walt Disney Mrs. Travers, what has you so upset now?
[sighs]
P.L. Travers Penguins! Penguins have very much upset me, Mr. Disney. Animated, dancing penguins! Now, you have seduced me with the music, Mr. Disney. Yes, you have. Those Sherman boys have quite turned my head. But I shall NOT be moved on the matter of cartoons, sir. Not...One...Inch!
Walt Disney It is a sequence.
P.L. Travers You promised me... You PROMISED me that this film would not be an animation!
[walks closer to Walt’s deck]
The Creation of New Words
Richard Sherman Room here for everyone / Gather around / The constable's "responstible"! / Now how does that sound?
[singing and playing the piano]
P.L. Travers Oh, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no! "Responstible" is not a word.
[Richard stops playing]
Richard Sherman Uh, we made it up.
P.L. Travers Well, un-make it up.
[Richard hides the music note sheet of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"]
Contrasting Views on Sweetness and Spirits
Walt Disney And a spoonful of sugar?
[preparing tea]
P.L. Travers No, I think I'll have whiskey.
The Nature of Teaching and Cruelty
Jennifer Honey This isn't teaching. This is cruelty!
Agatha Trunchbull Cruelty? Well, yes. Of course.
Lavender Brown Go on, boy.
[slips her pet newt Isaac in the water pitcher]
Agatha Trunchbull You did say it was going to be fun.
Jennifer Honey But this isn't fun!
Agatha Trunchbull Miss Honey, you are pathetic. You are weak. You are wet. You are, in fact... ...a snivelling, little... ...newt.
[pours the water from the pitcher in the cup; takes a slurp out of the cup; sees Isaac in the cup she drank from; screams in horror at the discovery of Isaac's presence in the water cup]
Justice for the Innocent Victims
Gareth Peirce Well then, would you be so kind as to read the statement that you took from him on the third of November 1974? A statement, Milord, which vindicates these people, all these innocent people. Someone, either that man, or his superior, or his superior's superior, ordered that these people be used as scapegoats by a nation that was baying for blood in return for the innocent blood spilled on the streets of Guildford! And by God, you've got your blood, Mr Dixon! You've got the blood of Giuseppe Conlon, you've got the lifeblood of Carole Richardson and you've got fifteen years of blood and sweat and pain from my client, whose only crime was he was bloody well Irish, and he was foolish and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time!
[to Robert Dixon at the appeal]
Conflict over Historical Perspectives in Education
Headmistress He's a Jew? You're aware, I take it, that the Jews killed our Lord?
Jenny And you're aware, I suppose, that our Lord was Jewish?
Headmistress I suppose he told you that. We're all very sorry about what happened during the war. But that's absolutely no excuse for that sort of malicious and untruthful propaganda.
Silent Heartbreak and Hidden Suffering
Elinor Dashwood What do you know of my heart? What do you know of anything but your own suffering? For weeks, Marianne, I've had this pressing on me without being at liberty to speak of it to a single creature. It was forced on me by the very person whose prior claims ruined all my hope. I have endured her exaltation again and again whilst knowing myself to be divided from Edward forever. Believe me, Marianne, had I not been bound to silence I could have provided proof enough of a broken heart, even for you.
The Importance of Listening
Nanny McPhee * Lesson 4 is complete. (Cedric: Lesson 4?) To listen.
The Paradox of Need and Want
Nanny McPhee There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me, but do not want me, then I will stay. If you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go. It's quite sad really, but there it is.
Nanny McPhee Then I will never go.
Consequences of the Last Petal Falling
Belle What happens when the last petal falls?
[to Lumière; looking at the rose]
Lumière The Master remains a beast forever and we become...
Mrs. Potts Antiques.
[sadly]
Lumière Knick-knacks.
Plumette Lightly-used housewares.
Cogsworth Rubbish. We become rubbish.
Belle I want to help you. There must be some way to break the curse.
Cogsworth Well, there is one...
[Lumière cuts him off]
Mrs. Potts It's not for you to worry about, lamb. We made our bed and now we must lie in it.
Problem Identified in London
Agent O I think we may have a problem in London.
Introduction of Nanny McPhee to Isabel
Nanny McPhee Good evening Mrs. Green I am Nanny McPhee.
Isabel Oh, you’re it i mean who are you?
Nanny McPhee I am Nanny McPhee. Small C, Big P.
Isabel Right. Thing is, I haven’t hired a nanny. I don’t need a nanny. I’m managing perfectly well. I never had a nanny because I don’t want any army nanny.
Nanny McPhee Mrs. Green, I have been deployed.
Isabel No, no, no, no there must be some mistake everything’s under control from hell. That’s Cyril, he’s not one of mine this is his cousin. He is parasitically. Not a very good influence indeed may come in. Must you i mean yes of course you must… perhaps later.
Nanny McPhee Let me introduce my self to the children.
Isabel No wait! Why don’t you put the kettle on?
Nanny McPhee I shan't be a moment. Um.
Bed-Sharing Dilemmas Among Characters
Nanny McPhee Norman, are you willing to share the bed with Cyril?
Norman Rather with a goat!
Nanny McPhee Celia, Megsie, are you willing to share the bed?
Celia I won't share anything with that harpy!
Megsie Rather with Geraldine!
Vincent It’s our cow! And me rather… an elephant!
Nanny McPhee Thanks Vincent, but you will not be required to share.
Vincent Ah, I don't share! I don’t share! I don’t share!
Concern for Evangeline's Well-Being
Mr. Brown Nanny McPhee...
Nanny McPhee Yes, Mr. Brown?
Mr. Brown She will be all right, won't she?, Evangeline, I mean.
Nanny McPhee I can't help being concerned.
Mr. Brown Aunt Adelaide can be so, um... Well, you saw.
Nanny McPhee She will certainly be all right.
Mr. Brown Good, I suppose she volunteered to go, did she?, couldn't wait to be shot of us, I imagine.
Nanny McPhee Not quite. It was Simon's idea. He knew Evangeline might like to educate herself and that her going would save Christianna.
A Journey of Unexpected Discoveries and Truths
Ralph It's been a real pleasure driving you, Mrs. Travers.
P.L. Travers No one likes a fibber.
Ralph Oh, no, no. I really have enjoyed it. I didn't know who you were at first. And then, guess what?
P.L. Travers You found out?
Ralph Well, I was telling my daughter all about my day and how I'm driving this nice writer lady, Mrs. Travers, for Mr. Disney, and, uh...
Ralph And... ...she made me go to her bedroom and bring her this. I can't stop reading it, you know. I'm very slow, mind you, so...
[fetches a copy of Mary Poppins from the car]
P.L. Travers Would you like me to sign it?
Ralph Would you?
P.L. Travers I'd be honored. Let me see, now. "To Jane, and her dearest father..." I've just this moment realized I don't know your name.
[taking the book; writing]
Ralph Ralph.
P.L. Travers Pamela. You're the only American I've ever liked, Ralph.
[finishes signing]
Ralph Oh...Well, may I ask why?
P.L. Travers No. Now, take this.
[hands him back the book; hands him a sheet of paper]
Ralph Albert Einstein, van Gogh, Roosevelt, Frida Kaylo-
[reading]
P.L. Travers Kahlo.
Ralph Kahlo? What is this?
P.L. Travers They all had difficulties. Jane can do anything that anyone else can do. Do you understand? Oh, I almost forgot. Turn it around.
[Ralph smiles and nods and she starts to walk away]
Ralph Walt Disney.
P.L. Travers Hyperactive behavior and deficiencies in concentration. It explains everything.
Ralph Thank you, Mrs. Travers.
Nanny McPhee's Progress on Sharing Lesson
Nanny McPhee * I am pleased to report, Mrs. Green, that lesson 2: to share nicely, is complete.
A Clash of Perspectives on Disneyland
Walt Disney You know, you've never been to Disneyland, that's the happiest place on Earth.
[on the phone]
P.L. Travers I cannot tell you how uninterested… no, positively sickened I am at the thought of going to see your dollar-printing machine.
Walt Disney Well, come on! When does anybody get to go to Disneyland with Walt Disney himself?
P.L. Travers Disappointments are to the soul what the thunderstorm is to the sky. Hello? Hello? He hung up!
[Walt hangs up angrily; to herself]
Dinner Preparations and Calm Conversations
Beast Lumiere!
[roars]
Lumière Be calm. Let me do the talking.
[turns to Cogsworth]
Beast You're making her dinner?
Lumière We thought you might appreciate the company.
Cogsworth Master, I just want to assure you that I had no part of this hopeless plan. Preparing her dinner, designing a gown for her, giving her a suite in the East Wing...
Beast You gave her a bedroom?
Cogsworth No, no, no! He gave her the bedroom.
Lumière Well, this is true. But, if this girl is the one who can break the spell, then maybe you can start by using dinner to charm her.
Lumière Good thinking, Cogsworth.
Cogsworth What?
Beast That's the most ridiculous idea, I've ever heard. Charm the prisoner.
Lumière But you must try, master. With every passing day, we become less human.
Beast She's the *daughter* of a common thief. What kind of person do you think that makes her?
Mrs. Potts Oh, you can't judge people by who their father is, now can you?
Questioning the Suppression of Evidence
Gareth Peirce Milord, this alibi for Gerry Conlon was taken by Mr Dixon one month after Gerry Conlon was arrested. This note was attached to it when I found it in police files. It reads "Not to be Shown to The Defence". I have one question to ask you, Mr Dixon. Why was the alibi for Gerry Conlon, who was charged with the murder of five innocent people...kept from the defence?
[she holds up the note, to gasps of disbelief from the gallery]
Conflict Over Pigtails in Matilda's World
Agatha Trunchbull Amanda Thripp.
[draws out the handheld speaker part of her microphone; Matilda and the children stare at Amanda, who looks frightened by the Trunchbull's presence]
Amanda Thripp Y-Y-Yes, Miss Trunchbull?
[stammers nervously]
Agatha Trunchbull What have I said about pigtails? I hate pigtails.
Amanda Thripp But my mummy loves them. She thinks they make me look pretty!
Agatha Trunchbull Well, your mother is a TWIT!
[pulls Amanda's pigtails and spins Amanda in a circle before launching Amanda above the fence like a hammer throw]
The Significance of Color in Storytelling
Walt Disney We can't make the picture without the color red. The film is set in London, for Pete's sake!
Walt Disney Well, there's buses, mailboxes, guards’ uniforms and things. Heck, even the English flag.
P.L. Travers I understand your predicament, Mr. Disney. I do. It's just… I don't know what it is, I'm suddenly very anti-red. I shan't be wearing it ever again.
Walt Disney Is this a test, Pamela? Are you requiring proof as to how much I want to make you happy, so we can create this beautiful thing together?
P.L. Travers I took you at your word, Mr. Disney, and it seems my first stipulation has been denied. There will be many more. So perhaps we should just call it quits and I... should hand you back these.
[takes out the rights]
Walt Disney All right. No red in the picture.
[faces the crew]
Lesson Three: Getting Dressed on Command

Beyond the System: The Men in Black

Nanny McPhee's Support is Requested
Nanny McPhee Leave it to me.
Megsie Nanny McPhee, we need you!
Children's Choices Lead to Unexpected Outcomes
Mr. Brown Nanny McPhee! Now she can't take the donkey, so what have you done?
Nanny McPhee I have done nothing, sir. The children have decided amongst themselves.
Mr. Brown Decided what?
Great Aunt Adelaide (off in distance) There you are, my dear.
Mr. Brown Not little Chrissy. (runs from the house) Chrissy!
Great Aunt Adelaide (in the carriage) Now, then, you'd better tell me your name, little girl.
Mr. Brown (bolts down the road) Chrissy!
Great Aunt Adelaide Don't be shy, my dear. What is your name?.
Mr. Brown (in the forest) Chrissy!
Great Aunt Adelaide Sit up straight, and tell me your name.
Mr. Brown (the carriage fades in the distance) NO! Christianna!
Christianna Papa! Papa!
Mr. Brown Oh, thank... (the other children run up to him) Oh... Then who is...?
Evangeline (raises head for Aunt Adelaide to see) Evangeline. My name is Evangeline.
Great Aunt Adelaide (chuckles) And what a pretty name it is too.
Mr. Brown (disbelief) Evangeline... Oh...
Misunderstandings Between Creator and Visionary
P.L. Travers Come to change my mind, haven't you? Beat me into submission?
Walt Disney No, no. I've come because you misjudge me.
P.L. Travers How do I misjudge you?
Walt Disney You look at me and you see some kind of Hollywood King Midas. You think I've built an empire and I want your Mary Poppins as just another brick in my kingdom.
P.L. Travers And don't you?
Walt Disney Now, if that was all it was, would I have suckered up to a cranky, stubborn dame like you for twenty years? No, I would have saved myself an ulcer. No, you, uh, you expected me to disappoint you, so you made sure I did. Well, I think life disappoints you, Mrs. Travers. I think it's done that a lot, and I think Mary Poppins is the only person in your life who hasn't.
P.L. Travers Mary Poppins isn't real.
Walt Disney That's not true. No, no, no, no. She was as real as can be to my daughters, and to thousands of other children - adults, too. She's been there as a nighttime comfort to a heck of a lot of people.
P.L. Travers Well, where is she when I need her, hm? I open the door for Mary Poppins, and who should be standing there but Walt Disney?
Walt Disney Mrs. Travers, I'm sorry. I hoped this would've been a magical experience for you and for all of us, but I let you down. And in doing so, I've broken a 20-year-old promise I made to my daughters. I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out why this has been so hard for you. And I... well... you see, I have my own Mr. Banks. Mine had a mustache.
P.L. Travers So not true that Disney created man in his own image?
Walt Disney No, no. But it is true that you created yourself, in someone else's, yes? Have you ever been to Kansas City, Mrs. Travers? Do you know Missouri at all?
[chuckles]
P.L. Travers I can't say I do.
Walt Disney Well, it's mighty cold there in the winters. Bitter cold. And my dad, Elias Disney, he owned a newspaper delivery route there. A thousand papers, twice daily; a morning and an evening edition. And Dad was a tough businessman. He was a "save a penny any way you can" type of fella, so he wouldn't employ delivery boys. No, no, no... he used me and my big brother Roy. I was eight back then, just eight years old. And, like I said, winters are harsh, and Old Elias, he didn't believe in new shoes until the old ones were worn through. And honestly, Mrs. Travers, the snowdrifts, sometimes they were up over my head, and we'd push through that snow like it was molasses. The cold and wet seeping through our clothes and our shoes. Skin peeling from our faces. Sometimes I'd find myself sunk down in that snow, just waking up because I must have passed out or something, I don't know. And then, well, it was time for school and I was too cold and wet to figure out equations and things. And then, well, it was right back out in the snow again to get home just before dark. Mother would feed us dinner, and then it was time to go right back out and do it again for the evening edition. "You'd best be quick there, Walt. You'd better get those newspapers up on that porch and under that storm door. Poppa's gonna lose his temper again and show you the buckle end of his belt, boy". I don't tell you this to make you sad, Mrs. Travers. I don't. I love my life, I think it's a miracle. And I loved my dad. He was a wonderful man. But rare is the day when I don't think about that eight-year-old boy delivering newspapers in the snow and old Elias Disney with that strap in his fist. And I am just so tired, Mrs. Travers. I'm tired of remembering it that way. Aren't you tired, too, Mrs. Travers? Now we all have our sad tales, but don't you want to finish the story? Let it all go and have a life that isn't dictated by the past? It's not the children she comes to save. It's their father. It's your father... Travers Goff.
[Travers looks noticeably unsettled by his story]
P.L. Travers I don't know what you think you know about me, Walter...
Walt Disney You must have loved and admired him a lot to take his name. It's him this is all about, isn't it? All of it, everything. Forgiveness, Mrs. Travers, it's what I learned from your books.
P.L. Travers I don't have to forgive my father. He was a wonderful man.
Walt Disney No... you need to forgive Helen Goff. Life is a harsh sentence to lay down for yourself. Give her to me, Mrs. Travers. Trust me with your precious Mary Poppins. I won't disappoint you. I swear every time a person walks into a movie house, from Leicester Square to Kansas City, they will see George Banks being saved. They will love him and his kids. They will weep for his cares. They will wring their hands when he loses his job, and when he flies that kite... Oh, Mrs. Travers, they will rejoice. They will sing. In movie houses all over the world, in the eyes and heads of my kids and other kids, and mothers and fathers for generations to come, George Banks will be honored. George Banks will be redeemed. George Banks, and all that he stands for, will be saved. Now maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that's what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again. So trust me, Mrs. Travers. Let me prove it to you. I give you, my word.

Gareth Peirce Well, I think they ought to take the word compassion out of the English dictionary.

The Value of Education and Experience
Headmistress Nobody does anything worth doing without a degree.
Jenny Nobody does anything worth doing with a degree. No woman anyway.
Headmistress So what I do isn't worth doing? Or what Miss Stubbs does, or Mrs. Wilson, or any of us here? Because none of us would be here without a degree. You do realize that, don't you? And yes, of course studying is hard and boring...
Jenny Boring!
Headmistress I'm sorry?
Jenny Studying is hard and boring. Teaching is hard and boring. So, what you're telling me is to be bored, and then bored, and finally bored again, but this time for the rest of my life? This whole stupid country is bored! There's no life in it, or color, or fun! It's probably just as well the Russians are going to drop a nuclear bomb on us any day now. So my choice is to do something hard and boring, or to marry my... Jew, and go to Paris and Rome and listen to jazz, and read, and eat good food in nice restaurants, and have fun! It's not enough to educate us anymore, Ms. Walters. You've got to tell us why you're doing it.
The Importance of Perfection in Politics
Susan Stanton The only shot we have here is to be perfect.
Unexpected Encounter with a Newt
Agatha Trunchbull Oh, God, the newt! It's in my... IT'S IN MY KNICKERS!!! IT'S IN MY KNICKEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
[panicking and screaming as Lavender's pet newt, Isaac, wriggles down her back]
The Influence of Parentage and Perception
Aunt Marge It's nothing to do with the father, it's all to do with the mother. You see it all the time with dogs. If there's something wrong with the bitch, then there's something wrong with the pup.
Sybill Trelawney You see, the truth lies buried like a sentence deep within a book, waiting to be read. But first, you must broaden your minds. First, you must look beyond.
Meeting the Creators of Mary Poppins
Don DaGradi So, this is the rest of your team. Dick and Bob Sherman, music and lyrics. Boys, this is the one and only Mrs. P.L. Travers, the creator of our beloved Mary!
P.L. Travers Poppins.
Don DaGradi Who else?
P.L. Travers Mary Poppins. Never, ever just Mary. It's a pleasure to meet you. I fear we shan't be acquainted for too long.
[to the Shermans]
Robert Why is that?
P.L. Travers Because these books simply do not lend themselves to chirping and prancing. No, it's certainly not a musical. Now, where is Mr. Disney? I should so much like to get this started and finished as briskly as is humanly possible.
Reprogramming Nature for Medical Advances
TV Personality The world of medicine has seen its share of miracle cures, from the polio vaccine to heart transplants. But all past achievements may pale in comparison to the work of Dr. Alice Krippin. Thank you so much for joining us this morning.
Dr. Alice Krippin Not at all.
TV Personality So, Dr. Krippin, give it to me in a nutshell.
Dr. Alice Krippin Well, the premise is quite simple — um, take something designed by nature and reprogram it to make it work for the body rather than against it.
TV Personality You're talking about a virus?
Dr. Alice Krippin Indeed, yes. In this case the measles, um, virus which has been engineered at a genetic level to be helpful rather than harmful. Um, I find the best way to describe it is if you can... if you can imagine your body as a highway, and you picture the virus as a very fast car, being driven by a very bad man. Imagine the damage that car can cause. Then if you replace that man with a cop... the picture changes. And that's essentially what we've done.
TV Personality And how many people have you treated so far?
Dr. Alice Krippin Well, we've had 10,009 clinical trials in humans so far.
TV Personality And how many are cancer-free?
TV Personality So you have actually cured cancer.
Dr. Alice Krippin Yes, yes... yes, we have.

P.L. Travers No, no. It's just that–– I can't… I can't abide cartoons.
A Father's Concern for His Handicapped Child
Ralph I got a kid.
P.L. Travers Most people do.
Ralph Jane. Yeah. Yeah. What a terrific kid. Beautiful little girl. She's got a lot of problems, though. She's handicapped, you know? She's in a wheelchair. See, and that's why I concern myself with the weather so much. Sunny day, she can sit outside in the garden. Rainy day, I gotta leave her cooped up inside. I worry about the future, but you can't do that. Only today.

Crisis Management in Unlikely Situations
Susan Stanton What's the crisis?
Richard Jemmons Say you're out in the woods takin a shit, and a wild boar comes charging at you. Do you pull your britches up and run? Or do you pull your britches up and grab the doves you just shot and then try to run all at the same time? Or do you forget about the fuckin doves and run because you ain't got time to grab the doves and button your fly? And if you miss, well... you don't wanna die with your dick hanging out, you see what I'm sayin'?

Young Carl Oh, by the way, our late night DJ Bob? He just wanted to tell you, "Muddy Waters rocks".
Charlotte Oh my God, he didn't... He didn't tell you, did he?
Young Carl Tell me what?
Charlotte What?
Young Carl Oh no, you didn't... You didn't sleep with him, did you?
Charlotte Well, of course I slept with him. Everyone did. He was absolutely gorgeous.
Young Carl You're talking about Bob? Bearded, beasty Bob?
[confused]
Charlotte Well, I can't speak to the beast part but I can tell you that back then, he was clean shaven.
Young Carl When?
Charlotte Oh I don't know. Quit badgering me. How old are you?
[pause]
Young Carl Eighteen and a half.
Charlotte Well, I guess it would have been nineteen and a quarter years ago. Give or take. There's my boat. That poor man must have been waiting for ages. I'm so glad we got that sorted out, aren't you? And tell Mark... you know... that it was a lovely, lovely night.
[Carl is silent as he realises Bob is his father; gets on the boat to shore]
Young Carl No! No!
[appalled]
Consequences of Magic and School Regulations
Mafalda Hopkirk Dear Mr. Potter, the Ministry has received intelligence that at 6:23 this evening, you performed the Patronus Charm in the presence of a Muggle. The Burden of Faith and Responsibility
Gareth Peirce It's not the stairs that are killing your father.
Gerry Conlon Aye, what is it then?
Gareth Peirce It's your lack of faith.
Gerry Conlon Lack of faith? Faith in what?
Gareth Peirce In yourself.
Gerry Conlon No. I have faith in myself. Gerry Conlon. Lifer. 30-year sentence. And I know how to survive it, no problem.
Gareth Peirce At what price?
Gerry Conlon I'll pay the fuckin price, don't you worry about it.
Gareth Peirce The price for what?
Gerry Conlon Aye. You're very good at the English, aren't you? You see, I don't understand your language. "Justice." "Mercy." "Clemency." I literally don't understand what those words mean. I'd like to put in an application to get all my teeth extracted. That way I could put my fist in my mouth and never speak another word of fuckin English so long as I live. Do you see what I'm saying... Mrs. Peirce is it?
Gareth Peirce Are you trying to impress me?
A Question of Trust in Relationships
Karen Tell me, what would you do in my position?
Harry What position is that?
Karen Imagine your husband bought a gold necklace and come Christmas gave it to somebody else...
Harry Oh, Karen...
Karen Would you wait around to find out if it's just a necklace, or if it's sex and a necklace, or if worst of all it's a necklace and love? Would you stay, knowing life would always be a little bit worse? Or would you cut and run?
Harry Oh, God. I am so in the wrong. The classic fool.
Karen Yes, but you've also made a fool out of me, and you've made the life I lead foolish too.
[voice breaking]

Family Support and Quick Thinking
Chip Mama!
Mrs. Potts Thank you!
LeFou Take that!
[punches the other villager out and turns to Mrs. Potts]
Mrs. Potts Nicely handled!
LeFou Well, I used to be on Gaston's side, but we are so in a bad place right now.
Mrs. Potts You're too good for him anyway.
LeFou Yeah.
Mrs. Potts Should we get back to it, then?
Dinner Invitation Amidst Uncertainty and Loss
Beast You'll join me for dinner. That's not a request.
[to Belle, gruffly]
Mrs. Potts Gently, Master. The girl lost her father and her freedom in one day.
Lumière Yes, the poor thing is probably in there scared to death.
Belle Just a minute.
Lumière You see? There she is. Now remember: Be gentle.
Mrs. Potts Kind.
Plumette Mmm, charming.
Cogsworth Sweet!
Lumière And when she opens the door, give her a dashing, debonaire smile! Come, come, show me the smile!
Cogsworth Oh, dear!
Plumette Oh, no!
Beast Will you join me for dinner?
[his smile vanishes; graciously]
Belle You've taken me as your prisoner, and now you want to have dinner with me? Are you insane?
[scoffs]
Plumette Uh-oh! He's losing it!
Cogsworth Oh, dear!
Beast I told you to join me for dinner!
[pounds on Belle's door repeatedly, angrily yelling]
Belle And I told you no!
[angrily]
Madame Garderobe Oh, what time is it? What's happening?
[awakens startled]
Belle I'd starve before I ever eat with you!
Beast Well, be my guest! Go ahead and starve! If she doesn't eat with me, then she doesn't eat at all! Idiots!
[roaring ferociously; to Lumiere angrily; storms off]
Misunderstandings Lead to Unfortunate Consequences
Beast OOWW!!! That hurts.
[roaring in pain]
Belle If you'd hold still, it wouldn't hurt as much.
Beast If you hadn't run away, none of this would have happened.
Belle Well, if you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!
Beast Well, YOU shouldn't have been in the West Wing.
Belle Well, YOU should learn to control your temper!
Belle Try to get some rest.
Mrs. Potts Thank you, miss.
Lumière We are eternally grateful.
Belle Why do you care about him so much?
Mrs. Potts We've looked after him all his life.
Belle But he's cursed you somehow. Why? You did nothing.
[Cogsworth feels ashamed at the remark]
Mrs. Potts You're quite right there, dear. You see, when the Master lost his mother, and his cruel father took that sweet, innocent lad and twisted him up to be just like him, we did nothing.
[ashamed]
Lumière Let him sleep.
Lessons from Experience and Human Nature
Susan Stanton Isn't that the thing experience teaches you? Not to get burned?
Henry Burton Does anyone ever learn that?
Susan Stanton Not the best people.
True Love Prevails in Unexpected Moments
Cogsworth Well, Master, I have had my doubts, but everything is moving like clockwork. True love really does win the day!
Beast I let her go.
Cogsworth You... what?!
Lumière Master, how could you do that?
Beast I had to.
Cogsworth But why?
Mrs. Potts Because he loves her.
Lumière Then why are we not human?
Cogsworth Because she doesn't love him and now it's too late.
Plumette But, she might still come back.
Beast No. I set her free. I'm sorry I couldn't do the same for all of you. Now, go. Our time is almost past.
Lumière Come, my love.
Beast I was the one who had it all,I was the master of my fate.I never needed anybody in my life,I learned the truth too late.I'll never shake away the pain,I close my eyes but she's still there.I let her steal into my melancholy heart,It's more than I can bear.

Perceptions of Weather and Responsibility in California
Ralph Hey, sun came out again.
P.L. Travers You say it as if you're surprised. As if the sun were particular about for whom it appears. It seems that you think that I am responsible for its miraculous dawning every day. For heaven's sake, it's California.
Ralph Certainly is.
P.L. Travers I'd so much rather be accountable for the rain.
Ralph Oh, that's sad.
P.L. Travers Sad is entirely the wrong emotion. I shan't bother explaining why. It would just... zip!
Ralph Okey dokey.
P.L. Travers The rain brings life.
Ralph So does the sun.
P.L. Travers Be quiet.
[looks at Ralph]
Ralph Yes, ma'am.
Childlike Joy and Creative Collaboration
Walt Disney There's no greater joy than that seen through the eyes of a child, and there's a little bit of a child in all of us.
[at his favorite carousel in Disneyland]
P.L. Travers Maybe in you, Mr. Disney, but certainly not in me.
Walt Disney Get on the horse, Pamela.
Walt Disney The boys have had an idea for your Mr. Banks. I think it'll make you happy.
[while riding on one of the horses]
P.L. Travers You brought me all the way out here to tell me that?
Walt Disney No. I brought you all the way out here for monetary gain. Had a wager with the boys that I couldn't get you on a ride. I just won 20 bucks!
Understanding Nanny McPhee's Role and Departure
Nanny McPhee There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go. It's quite sad really, but there it is.
[repeated line]
Finding Confidence Before the Wedding
Evangeline Oh, Nanny McPhee, I'm so nervous.
Nanny McPhee Deep breaths.
Evangeline I don't look much like a bride, do I?
Nanny McPhee You will.
Nanny McPhee How's the reading coming along?
Evangeline It's much better. But I still haven't got to the end of the story.
Nanny McPhee No need. You are the end of the story.
Nanny McPhee (narrating) There is something you should understand about the way I work. When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go.
