Haruki Ryles Biography

Haruki Ryles is a 20-year-old emerging filmmaker and passionate storyteller based in Queensland, Australia. Growing up in a Japanese household, he was immersed in Asian cinema from a young age, drawing inspiration from the energy of Hong Kong and Japanese action films. His work seeks to honour those traditions while creating stories that resonate with his generation.

In 2025, Haruki completed his debut feature, 100% Pure Rage, a crowd-funded, $3,000 action-comedy film. The film was made over the course of 2 years with friends and family volunteering as cast and crew, shooting during whatever time was available between university and work. The film premieres at SXSW Sydney 2025, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Previously, he directed the proof-of-concept short RED-CELL (2022) and Shutter (2023), which won Best Short at the Studs Short Film Fest and received nominations at the Vienna International Film Awards and the Horrific Hope Film Festival. His earlier short Lucas’ New Friend (2022) also received multiple nominations at Bond University’s BAFTA Film Competition.

Alongside directing, Haruki has industry experience in post-production. He has worked in the VFX department at Jaggi Entertainment’s Serve Chilled post house, contributing 3D assets and environments to Jo-Anne Brechin’s upcoming feature Killer Whale. He specialises in writing, directing, editing, and VFX. Fluent in both English and Japanese, Haruki is currently completing his Bachelor of Film and Screen Media Production at Griffith Film School.
