Marcello Mercado Biography

Marcello Mercado (b. 1963, Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, Chaco, Argentina) is an Argentine-German interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker working between Argentina and Germany. His practice spans experimental film, video, installation, drawing, bio-art and algorithmic systems, exploring archives, artificial intelligence, memory, obsolescence and the transformation of images through technological and biological processes.

He studied Film, Television and Psychology at the National University of Córdoba and later at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln). Since the early 1990s, Mercado has developed a body of work that combines cinema, performance, bio-art and media archaeology. His works have been presented at major international institutions and events including Museum Ludwig, ZKM, Museo Reina Sofía, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Videobrasil, Transmediale and the 51st Venice Biennale.

He has received awards and fellowships from Ars Electronica, Videobrasil, the Rockefeller Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and other international organizations. Recent projects such as Das Kapital, ERODE and The Hypergaussian Wars continue his investigation into image systems, algorithmic warfare, archives and the unstable relationship between matter, memory and technology.
