Robert Makłowicz Biography

Robert Makłowicz (born 12 August 1963 in Kraków, Poland) is a Polish journalist, food critic, writer, publicist, traveler, and entrepreneur. He is best known as the creator and host of the culinary travel program "Makłowicz w podróży". He was born to Włodzimierz Makłowicz, a sailor, and Beata (née Preiss). His family background includes Polish, Ukrainian, Armenian, Hungarian, and Austrian roots.

He attended the V Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Augusta Witkowskiego w Krakowie and later studied law and then history at the Jagiellonian University, though he did not complete either degree. Around 1989–1990 he lived in the United Kingdom, working for several months as a laborer in Kingston upon Thames. During this time he explored different world cuisines, which motivated him to become a food critic after returning to Poland in 1990.

In 1993 he became a columnist for Gazeta Wyborcza. In 1998 he began hosting the television culinary travel series "Podróże kulinarne Roberta Makłowicza" on Telewizja Polska. After that program ended in 2008, he started a new series, "Makłowicz w podróży", on TVP2. He also appeared as a culinary guide in the first two seasons of "Bake Off – Ale ciacho!".

After TVP ended cooperation with him in 2017, he briefly worked with Food Network on the program "Makłowicz w drodze". In March 2020 he launched his own YouTube channel where he publishes culinary and historical videos. From 2020 to 2021 he hosted a music program ("Od Punk Rocka do Bartóka") on newonce.radio. He has also written books, including "Cafe Museum" (2010), which received the Srebrny Kałamarz literary award.

In 2022 he became an ambassador for the “Wrocław Year of Good Relations” initiative addressing social isolation. In 2024 he joined the council of the Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Krakowa and recorded route announcements used in public transport vehicles in Kraków. Makłowicz has also been involved in business. He co-founded the company Propinquus, which together with Pamapol created the food company "Makłowicz i Synowie", producing and distributing food products sold in major Polish retail chains such as Lidl and Biedronka.
