Behind the perfect family facade and glamorous lifestyle, Brooke Hayward (Deborah Raffin) is miserable. Her mother, famous actress Margaret Sullavan (Lee Remick), is trying to keep her crumbling marriage together, but her depression and insecurity are taking over. Brooke's father, Broadway playwright Leland Hayward (Jason Robards), is emotionally cruel and tries to buy her love with expensive gifts. As Margaret becomes increasingly unstable, Brooke and her siblings pay the ultimate price.
