Since they first debuted on the comics scene in 1984, created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman as both a way to bring new characters into the world and as a parody of the likes of Daredevil, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have gone on to become a pop cultural sensation all their own.
And they’ve been adapted for a variety of movie and TV shows, not to mention a world of merchandise from video games, toys and lunch boxes.
So to make a new movie based on the characters stand out, you’ve got to have something different to offer. For ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’, that would appear to be a combo of a slick, funky animation style and a voice cast that blends established names (including producer Seth Rogen) with actors for the Turtles who actually sound like teenagers.
That animation style is likely partly thanks to the director, Jeff Rowe, who worked on ‘The Mitchells Vs. the Machines’, which pushed the envelope itself. He worked alongside Kyler Spears, while Brendan O’Brien, who has worked with Rogen a lot, wrote the script.
What’s the story of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’?
The Turtles’ origin story is a classic comic book fable –– as babies the turtles are accidentally exposed to radioactive ooze and it mutates them into walking, talking humanoid creatures. Found and tutored by rat Splinter (who was also affected), they’ve been trained in martial arts. But they’re also teenagers who love to skateboard, swap jokes and snack on pizza. Oh, and they’re named after renaissance painters.
The main foursome are leader Leonardo (blue mask, katana swords), gruff loner Raphael (red mask, Sai knives), nerdy tech genius Donatello (purple mask, bo staff) and party dude Michelangelo (orange mask nunchakus).
Of course, you probably already know this, as that origin story has been told almost as many times as Batman’s or Spider-Man’s on screen. Though there are some flashbacks in the teaser, it appears we’re in for a take where they’re established and looking to break out of the sewer.
Here’s the official synopsis: “After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
