Plot Summary

Following the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson assigns Capt. Meriwether Lewis (Fred MacMurray) and Lt. William Clark (Charlton Heston) to an expedition to explore the new U.S. territory. Guided by the Native American woman Sacajawea (Donna Reed), Lewis and Clark embark on a journey through unknown and treacherous terrain in hopes of finding a water route from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. However, both nature and man stand in their way.
