"His Dark Materials" has set the voice cast for HBO and BBC's upcoming big-budget adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy novels.

The story takes place in an alternate universe where human souls take the form of animal companions called daemons. The bond between the two is sacred.

Season 1 follows Lyra (Dafne Keen) and her daemon Pantalaimon, who live at Jordan College in Oxford until she gets caught up in a nefarious plot to steal children and the mystery of a phenomenon called Dust.

Kit Connor (young Elton John in “Rocketman”) will voice Pantalaimon aka Pan.

American comedian Cristela Alonzo is voicing aeronaut Lee Scoresby’s (Lin-Manuel Miranda) arctic hare daemon Hester, while "Poirot" star David Suchet takes on the identity of Kaisa, the gyrfalcon daemon to the witch Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas).

And Joe Tandberg ("The Innocents") will voice the famous armored bear Byrnison, who is both a skilled metal worker and a fierce warrior.

Helen McCrory ("Peaky Blinders") was previously announced as the voice of Stelmaria, the snow leopard daemon of Lord Asriel, Lyra’s uncle (James McAvoy).

Meanwhile, Ruth Wilson‘s mysterious and dangerous Mrs. Coulter has a golden monkey daemon that doesn’t speak or have a name. Brian Fisher, a puppeteer from "Detective Pikachu," will provide the animal noises and vocal characteristics. Fisher also serves as the lead puppeteer and CFX coordinator on "His Dark Materials."
