Adam Sandler's animated film "Hotel Transylvania 2" checked in at the No. 1 spot at the box office over the weekend with $47.5 million - a record for September.

The sequel surpassed its previous opening of $42.5 million in 2012 when the feature debuted.

"It's on its way to being one of the most beloved franchises of all time," Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution, tells Variety.

"There are a lot of stories left to tell," he adds, hinting that a third installment could be in the works. "Adam and the filmmakers have created an unforgettable animated world that plays to audiences everywhere."

"The Intern," featuring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, debuted at second place with $18.2 million, followed by "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" in third with $14 million.
