A week away from Halloween proved to a be scary time at the box office for new movies.

"Jem and the Holograms" bombed at historical levels, scraping up only $1.3 million -- or just $545 a screen -- to become what may be the worst-performing major studio movie ever to open on more than 2,000 screens, according to weekend estimates.

"The Last Witch Hunter" and "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" also faltered, bringing in only about $11 million and $8 million respectively. For the Vin Diesel-starring "Witch Hunter," the poor fourth-place opening may have doomed any chances of the film launching a franchise.

With the new releases languishing, "The Martian" reclaimed No. 1 with nearly $16 million in its fourth week, just ahead of "Goosebumps" with about $15.5 million in week two. "Bridge of Spies" had $11.4 million for third, with only a small drop-off in ist second week. "Hotel Transylvania 2"rounded out the top five with $9 million in week five.
