Julie Adams, best known as the damsel in distress in 1954's "Creature From the Black Lagoon," died Sunday in L.A. at the age of 92.

Adams’ death was confirmed on her official website.

Her career spanned six decades in film and on television. Adams also appeared opposite opposite Elvis Presley in 1965's "Tickle Me," with Dennis Hopper in 1971's "The Last Movie," and with John Wayne in 1974's "McQ."

Adams also did quite a bit of TV work, starring opposite Jimmy Stewart in his short-lived NBC comedy series in 1971.

Her most famous role was that of Kay Lawrence in the monster movie conceived of as an underwater version of "Beauty and the Beast."

"I thought, 'The creature from what? What is this?' because I had been working with some major stars and so on," Adams said in a 2013 interview for the Horror Society. "But I read it and said, 'If I turn it down, I won't get paid and I'll be on suspension.' And then I thought, 'What the hay! It might be fun.' And of course, indeed it was. It was a great pleasure to do the picture."

Adams is survived by her two sons with ex-husband and "Looters" co-star Ray Danton: Steve, an actor and assistant director, and Mitchell, as well as four grandchildren.

Among those paying tribute to the actress is Guillermo del Toro, who was inspired by "Creature From the Black Lagoon" as a child:
