"Star Trek" is going where it's never gone before: the real world.

A spinoff centered on "Next Generation" lead Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is in the works at CBS All-Access and its tone will be "extremely different" from previous "Star Trek" series.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman — who's worked on J.J. Abrams' film franchise and currently serves as showrunner on "Star Trek: Discovery" — told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s an extremely different rhythm than 'Discovery.'"

"'Discovery' is a bullet. 'Picard' is a very contemplative show," he continued. "It will find a balance between the speed of 'Discovery' and the nature of what 'Next Gen' was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm."

Stewart will reprise his famous role in the new show, which is expected to debut in late 2019.

Not much is known about the plot. Sources told Moviefone in August that it will  take place after the events of the 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," in the 24th century timeline where the captain's previous adventures took place. Picard will be in the third act of his life, with some distance between him and his space-based adventures.

“Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in 'Next Gen' is really exciting," Kurtzman added.

"‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery is also grounded. It will feel more… real-world? If that’s the right way to put it.”
