Break out the berets! With winter rapidly approaching, Tom Hanks is just about ready to add a daily accessory to his seasonal wardrobe.

"When I first moved to New York, I had never experienced cold because I grew up around Oakland, Calif. and it never got super, super, super cold," he told Jimmy Fallon on "The Tonight Show" on Thursday. "So I was told that you must wear anything on your head because the heat will go straight up and out of you."

His headwear of choice? A beret.

“I buy the $5 berets," he said, "you know, the guys that are selling them on tables all over Manhattan."

A beret, he said, is a very adaptable.

"You can wear them back; you can wear them to the side; you can wear them up front," the actor said. "Sometimes they're really big and you wear them way back and you look like a nun, and they're five bucks. If you lose one it's just another five bucks."

Hanks is starring in "Bridge of Spies," in theaters now. Watch the trailer below.
