Plot Summary
Her marriage on the rocks, cabaret singer Mele (Aissa Maiga) returns home after a degrading night of work and finds her apartment complex transformed into an elaborate tribunal in which the institutions of international capitalism are being put on trial. Her sister (Djénéba Koné) stands up alongside peasants, farmers and other citizens, appealing to the bureaucrats of the international banking cabal. A long night in pursuit of justice is offset by a sultry evening of Malian life.

  • Never mind Hollywood's big-star, big-budget hand-wringing about Africa - Bamako is the real thing. show more

  • As demonstrated in his previous film, a plangent snapshot of subsistence called "Waiting for Happiness," Sissako is a poet, and the filmmaking in this new picture is stuff of a deserving laureate. show more

  • Sissako has an unusual camera eye, patient and alert to the ebb and flow of both the courtroom sequences and the outside scenes. The music is wonderful as well. show more
