hmm. while the rest of the US have given this film high marks, rated it among the best of 2012 films, two peeps here in sou florida...have the above opionions..guess art as well as many other things inlife...class, culuture, friends, the circles within which such opinionators form their opinions, which is of course, part of 'freedom to express...they find it boring, not bad then not good

THIS IS NOT A BAD MOVIE...BUT THEN IT IS NOT A GOOD MOVIE. The costumes are fantastic but the context, as we all know is atrocious: killing a queen because of political ideology. The peerformmances were great but no matter the great performances could not pull this movie up and out of its drag and gloom.--MO

The foreboding and chaos contrast neatly with the lavish costumes and sets. Versailles takes on the feel of a gilded fortress, behind which the serving class hopes to hide. But money can't buy everything, including, in this case, security. Full Review

Whether accurate or not, it's certainly entertaining to watch regal intrigues through the eyes of lady-in-waiting Sidonie (Léa Seydoux). That Jacquot handles the action so lightly is a credit, considering that it takes place during some of the tensest moments of the French Revolution. Full Review

Control is the operative element in Benoît Jacquot's work, with the main caveat being that when someone has it, someone else does not. Full Review

Wall Street Journal
The story refuses to combust; it's a strangely unsatisfying combination of bloodless observations and unresolved sexuality. Full Review

Time Out New York
Once the rote plot takes over - the tension brought on by the film's you-are-there verisimilitude quickly devolves into soapily overwrought theatrics. Full Review
