The visual effects in Hugo, some of which are computer-enhanced, are stunning proof that Scorseseâs ability to orchestrate great cinematography is as potent as ever. But the sheer meanness that abo... unds in this movie irreparably diminishes it. Rather than a redemptive tale with satisfying or even plausible development, Hugo is a melange of self-pitying contrivance and refusal to evolve, mixed with a heap of âIâve suffered, so others should tooâ.
