Retiring to a small village in Ireland, Irish-American writer James Ronald Mulcahy (William Bendix) is at odds with the religious villagers. When Mulcahy calls for God to strike him dead, a man with amnesia -- later coined "Johnny Nobody" (Aldo Ray) -- shoots him down. The village priest, Father Carey (Nigel Patrick), investigates, probing into matters of faith and into Johnny's past, which leads him to believe Johnny's lover, Miss Floyd (Yvonne Mitchell), was behind the shooting, not God.
