In a Texas ravaged by the Great Depression, lawyer George Tolliver (Brad Davis) hopes to impress his mother and his brother Leonard (Frederic Forrest) by winning a local election. But Leonard, a more established attorney, has bet his money on a different candidate, which deepens an already existing rift between the siblings. Yet, as the accomplished Leonard is suddenly forced to deal with a crumbling marriage and the death of his child, his priorities begin to change.
