Nothing groundbreaking, but there's an easy charm in the movie. show more

So many movies these days are overworked or overblown: The Hammer feels genuinely tossed-off. It isn't a great movie, or even a consistently good one. Yet it gets to elusive feelings about failure and success, hope and mortality (and reveals a quietly subversive attitude toward the boxing-movie genre). show more

The Hammer benefits from Carolla's low-energy, low-impact style. He doesn't so much deliver quips as let them dribble out the side of his mouth. show more

    The Hollywood Reporter

The film hardly could be credited with breaking any new ground, but it has a hangdog charm, much like its leading actor. show more

    Maitland McDonagh TV Guide

It's genuinely funny, oddly romantic and surprisingly engaging for what could easily have been an obnoxious vanity project. show more

    Kyle Smith New York Post

The script depends heavily on familiar stand-up comedy bits, but it's full of sharp wisecracks and slacker charm. show more

Plays like a pilot for a situation comedy about a 40-year-old carpenter who decides to return to the boxing ring. show more

    Gene Seymour Los Angeles Times

What you have here, essentially, is a classic "Honeymooners" episode juiced with tropes from the most recent "Rocky" movie. show more

Rambling and disorganized. At the same time, though, The Hammer also has dry wit and unforced working-class swagger, and hits some surprising emotional notes. show more

    Ronnie Scheib Variety

This inordinately likable and consistently funny boxing saga-cum-romantic comedy doesn't so much ridicule the "Rocky"-type inspirational sports fable as gently deflate its heroic overdrive. show more

What a refreshing break from the canned out of the box Hollywood standard comedy. Hammer was intelligent, witty and really charming. Carolla's great in his first headliner role. Can't wait to see what he does next.

The comedic give-and-take of this movie kept me laughing almost from the moment the movie started. It was so good, I am going to see it for a second time in two days, and this time I am bringing additional friends to enjoy it! Keep your ears open during this one or you might miss some of the best dialogue. Relax and enjoy!

I am not sure why the critics gave this one a -60-. I thought this movie was a lot better than that. Definitely worth seeing. My girlfriend actually enjoyed it. Great movie.
