Plot Summary
When their father passes away, four grown, world-weary siblings return to their childhood home and are requested -- with an admonition -- to stay there together for a week, along with their free-speaking mother (Jane Fonda) and a collection of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. As the brothers and sisters re-examine their shared history and the status of each tattered relationship among those who know and love them best, they reconnect in hysterically funny and emotionally significant ways.

  • This comedy about a death is a funeral for the audience. show more

  • Bateman comes off well, humanizing his character with a strain of melancholy that’s one of the movie’s genuinely touching elements. Fey is all right, though she falls back on her patented shtick. Driver makes the most of his hipsterish role, nicely playing off the other siblings’ tension. show more

  • As a film it feels overly familiar, with some amusing scenes, but not enough to make for a wholly satisfying experience. show more

It is hard to imagine that in modern times, where movie funding is so precious that a picture this bad can get made. I see 200+ pictures a year and am a professional novelist and screenwriter. First, and formost, I didn't get "what this movie was about." Was it about (a) grieving about Dad's loss?; (b) a thinly articuated pretext to learn about Justin Bateman's dysfunction?; (c) a family that was sick and needed help; (d) Jane Fonda needing something to do? ....or all of the above. How many characters can we pack into a film? ... and bad borscht-belt sight gags and stick! Oey vey...I thought the whole thing with the Rabbi was puerile and frankly disrespectful...incompetently misguided. My personal test for films is whether anyone will watch it in, say, 5 years. I don't think anyone should watch this film now...

Love Jason Bateman and Tina Fey, so I was looking forward to this film. There are a few good scenes, but for the most part it drags on and is a bit boring. Fonda's breast gags were just plain creepy.

Grief does funny things to people, and sometimes, yeah, it can be pretty funny. Hey, you either laugh or you cry, right? Well, if we had to hang out with a grieving, dysfunctional family, we'd want it...
