Plot Summary
Three soldiers endure the crucible of World War II. Christian Diestl (Marlon Brando) is a ski instructor turned Nazi lieutenant whose initial enthusiasm for Hitler is vanishing, Noah Ackerman (Montgomery Clift) is a Jewish-American grunt who fights to overcome prejudice in his own unit, and Michael Whiteacre (Dean Martin) is a Broadway crooner who uses his connections to avoid combat, only to later feel guilty about it. Movie has not worn well. So many inconsistencies. Dean Martin with a full, finely coiffed head of hair in basic training no less!! A major as company commander and a first sgt. as barracks nco in basic training!! Not so in real army. And the whole basic training company stays together for the whole War? C'mon! And how about the continual pontification and preaching!! In the book, I recall Marlon Brando being killed after the war is over! On the plus side, Hope Lange was quite pretty as a young girl and May Britt very alluring.

One of the finest films ever. Brando is superb. Dean Martin, Montgomer Clifft and balance of cast exceptional. Mai Britt had short role and she was sexual and perfect for the part.
